Description
Winner of the Victorian Craft Award for Furniture 2019.
“The idea that a piece of furniture should finished equally well on all surfaces - the front, the back and underneath - is something that interests me greatly.
I’ve created a piece where there is no front or back, and drawers open from both ends. I’ve taken that one step further where the sides of the piece are glass, so you can see the mechanics of the drawers, the joinery of the drawers and how it’s actually made. Everything is finished, is exposed and on show.
“This piece uses a technically difficult joinery technique on the corners, which is a three-way mitre. Inside that three-way mitre is series of tenons that meet in three different ways. It’s made out of one piece of Fiddleback Blackwood that came from the Otway Ranges in Victoria. It was salvaged by a guy that actually carried it out of a valley. The drawers are made from Celery Top Pine from Tasmania.
“As there is no front or back, this piece needs to sit in the middle of a room where it can be seen from all sides.”
